Home Learning at Rockwood Academy
At Rockwood Academy, home learning is an essential part of the curriculum. It supports pupils in developing independence, confidence, and mastery of key knowledge. All home learning is set and completed using online learning platforms, enabling pupils to review content, practise skills, and receive immediate feedback.
Our Approach
Home learning tasks are carefully planned and fully integrated into subject curricula. Using online platforms ensures that:
- Pupils receive personalised learning pathways tailored to their progress
- Immediate feedback supports understanding and improvement
- Pupils can learn at their own pace and revisit challenging topics
- Teachers and parents and carers can track progress and engagement in real time
- Learning is reinforced consistently across all subjects
Expectations
- Home learning is set regularly and is meaningful and appropriate for each year group
- Pupils are expected to record all home learning tasks in their student planner
- Pupils must complete all tasks on time and to a high standard
- Non-completion may result in sanctions, while consistent engagement and excellence are recognised through our Home Learning Champions awards
- Tasks and updates are also sent via email, and parents and carers are encouraged to monitor these emails to track progress and support their child
Frequency of Home Learning Tasks
The frequency of tasks varies by key stage and subject to ensure that home learning is meaningful and manageable.
- Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11): All subjects studied set weekly home learning tasks
- Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9):
- Core and EBacc subjects (English, Maths, Science, Humanities, and Modern Foreign Languages) set weekly home learning tasks. Religious Education, Health and Social Care and Sports Science set weekly home learning tasks
- Creative, and Performing Arts set a minimum of two home learning tasks per half term
Platforms Used
Each subject area uses a platform suited to its curriculum:
- Sparx – Maths and Science
- SENECA Learning – English, Religious Education, Humanities, PE, Creative & Performing Arts
- Educake – Computer Science and Business
- Languagenut – Modern Foreign Languages
Pupils are issued login details at the start of the year and supported in accessing platforms during lessons.
Support for Parents and Carers
At Rockwood Academy, we recognise the vital role parents and carers play in supporting pupils’ home learning. To help you support your child effectively:
Celebrate your child’s consistent engagement and achievements, including recognition through our Home Learning Champions leaderboard.
We provide a Parental Support Guide for SENECA Learning, explaining how to monitor your child’s progress, access tasks, and troubleshoot common issues. See the guide below.
Parents and carers are encouraged to check home learning emails regularly and track their child’s completion and progress.
Guidance is also available for using other platforms (Sparx, Educake, Languagenut) to support pupils in Maths, Science, Languages, Computer Science, and Business.
